The Board started the New Year running with a full agenda of activities to continue developing the Association. Here are some of the key items your Board members have been busy working on. New Branding for the Association - We are looking for a more suitable name and branding for the Association. Once the guidelines have been established, we will invite your participation in helping us with the design of an official logo for the Association. We will provide you with the details of the logo design contest in the next edition of the newsletter. Membership Development - The Association is here to serve you - the members. We are working on improving the services and benefits for our existing membership as well as preparing the Association to attract new members. A membership recruitment program is on the way and will be initiated in the in the weeks to come. Sponsorships - Part of the development plans for the Association include establishing business relationships with Compaq partners and potential sponsors to enhance the value exchange for our members. Web Site Improvements - The Association's web site at http://canacu.org is undergoing improvements to better represent the Association and serve as the online 'storefront' for the Association. Part of the planned improvements will include more content of interest to the membership as well as the new branding for the Association. Please Tell Us What You Want As part of the Board's efforts to improve the Association's services to the members, a short membership survey is being prepared to gather some general information on how we can serve and better communicate with you. Keep an eye out for the membership survey some time in February! OpenVMS Hobbyist Licence You can order the OpenVMS Hobbyist Licence through your membership in the Association.. Here are the instructions: The complete transaction takes place on the OpenVMS site Go to http://www.montagar.com/hobbyist Go to the link "License Register". This will take you to a license registration page where you will be required to complete a form Enter your Association membership number on the ordering form If you do not know your membership number, or you are not a member of the Association, send an e-mail message to inquire@canacu.org The licence is free of charge. There is a charge of $30.00 USF if you want to receive the software on CD media. Useful Links Here are a couple of interesting links for Digital folk: The Digital Alumni, Inc. (http://www.decalumni.com) is an organization dedicated to the interests of former employees of Digital Equipment Corporation. Their goal is to provide ways for alumni to share information, and remain connected to one another both personally and professionally. OpenVMS.org (http://www.openvms.org) is a web site for System Administrators, developers, and enterprise managers, offering recent industry news, events, links, etc. related to Compaq's OpenVMS operating system running on the Alpha platform. Technical Tidbits Bargain basement prices for memory may be at an end. Hynix has announced a 30% price increase and Samsung is talking about a similar price increase. For only the second time ever, PC sales dropped in 2001. Worldwide sales declined 4.8%. If strong growth in Latin America and Asia-Pacific is excluded, sales dropped a whopping 11.2%. Scientists have developed an instant lie detector technique which picks up mini hot flushes around the eyes and could lead to truth tests becoming standard at airport check-ins, the journal Nature reported. In controlled tests, the thermal camera correctly picked out 75% of 'lying' individuals. North American carriers have begun receiving shipments of third-generation, high-speed phones from Qualcomm. Among other things, the new phones feature an always-on data connection at rates up to 153 kbs. Intel has introduced two new versions of the Pentium 4-code-named Northwood-that will run at 2.2GHz and 2.0GHz. The chip is made with Intel's new 0.13-micron manufacturing process which has allowed Intel to shrink the chip dramatically. Northwood chips contain 512KB of cache compared to current Pentium 4s which contain 256KB. We are Looking For a Few, Good Reporters Here's your chance to MAKE the news instead of just reading it! Canadian Tandem User Group (CTUG) As a charter member of the Canadian Association of Compaq Users, the Tandem (Compaq NSK) Security Special Interest Group, through the Canadian Tandem Users Group (CTUG) has been informed of a meeting regarding the security aspects of the Compaq NSK platform. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday February 14th at the Markham Compaq offices. The speaker is Ron LaPedis, Compaq's Senior Product Manager, Business Continuity & Platform Security.
