Even if you didn't participate in the polls, the results are well worth a look. The site offers you a way to vote (and potentially influence Compaq) on issues that interest you. PLEASE TELL US WHAT YOU WANT As part of the Board's efforts to improve the value of your membership with the Association, a brief survey will soon be available to let you tell us what benefits and services you would like to see being offered and how we can better communicate with you. Keep an eye out for the membership survey in the weeks to come! OPENVMS HOBBYIST LICENSE You can order the OpenVMS Hobbyist License through your membership in the Association. COMPAQ BLADE DEBUTS The first Compaq 'blade' server (networked computers stacked side-by-side so that up to 280 can fit in a single six-foot-tall rack) is now on sale. That's a ton of computing power in a tiny footprint. Additional information on this product can be found at www.compaq.com under the caption, "Sharpening the cutting edge." USEFUL LINKS Here are a couple of interesting links for Compaq users: The Inquirer (http://www.theinquirer.net) by Mike McGee is an outrageous collection of articles about the HP Compaq merger, the future of Alpha, the prospects of Intel and whatever else takes his fancy. It is rough around the edges but well worth a look. Tru64.org (http://www.tru64.org/) is a web site for System Administrators, developers, and enterprise managers, offering recent industry news, events, links, etc. related to Compaq's Tru64 UNIX operating system running on the Alpha platform. HP-COMPAQ MERGER Walter Hewlett has launched a Web site (http://www.votenohpcompaq.com) as the latest step in his fight against the pending HP and Compaq merger. Alliance Capital, one of HP's largest institutional investors, said it supports the planned acquisition of Compaq, a rare statement in an industry where many tend not to disclose their positions. Alliance controls about 1of HP outstanding shares. Meanwhile, HP says an internal survey suggests that 65% of its staff favor the merger. Stay tuned for the next exciting episode. TECHNICAL TIDBITS Hewlett-Packard and University of California scientists have patented a process that could possibly produce nanochips smaller than bacterium-within the next decade. Internet retailer Amazon.com posted its first quarterly net profit EVER (!) beating its own forecasts and Wall Street's expectations. WE ARE LOOKING FOR A FEW, GOOD REPORTERS Here's your chance to report the news instead of just reading it! We are looking for users from each of Compaq's product lines to keep their ear to the ground and bring us their 'front line' reports. If you want to be a reporter on the Association's Newsletter staff, send an e-mail to the attention of Alan Clifford at inquire@canacu.org.
