PASSING AWAY OF JOHN WISNIEWSKI It is with great sadness to announce the passing away of John Robert Wisniewski on Sunday, April 4th after a short illness. John joined Digital in 1987 and became a VMS Ambassador in 1998. He was deeply committed to the ongoing success of OpenVMS and many of us will remember him as a strong proponent of the OpenVMS Hobbyist Program. Association President, Dave Wilson commented, "Although we did not know John Wisniewski personally, we know of him through the good work that he has done with your OpenVMS Hobbyist Team, Pat Jankowiak, OpenVMS Hobbyist #1, and Steve Smiley, Webmaster. Many of our Canadian members have benefitted from John's perseverance in pursuing the Hobbyist licence concept to fruition. From the outpouring of sympathy I've seen in the VMS SIG digest, it is also evident that he touched many people and that he was a great human being. From the Board of the Canadian Association of Compaq Users, I offer our sincere condolences to the loss of a colleague, teammate and friend." Tributes and dedications to John can be found at: http://wiz.openvms.org/ 3. ASSOCIATION DEVELOPMENT CONTINUES WITH PHASE FOUR The Association is continuing with phase 4 of its development road map, concentrating on creating greater value for our membership and HP and generating revenue to sustain the ongoing administration and growth of the organization. Other expected key developments are a name change for the Association and a makeover of the Web site in order to better represent the Association a member of the HP user group comunity. The Association's development road map is available at: http://www.canacu.org/aboutus-home.htm 4. EDMONTON EVENT POSTPONED DUE TO SNOW The user group event scheduled for Edmonton on April 14, 2002 wasunfortunately cancelled at the last minute due to a severe snow storm (Yes, in April but it's Alberta!) On behalf of our members here in Canada, we'd like to offer our sincere condolences. Some of us knew or met John through the U.S. symposia while others know of him because of the OpenVMS Hobbyist, a service that has benefitted Canadian users across our three coasts, thanks to John and his team. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues. Warmest regards, Anne Anne Murakami Canadian Association of Compaq Users - An HP User Group http://www.canacu.org Here is one more tidbit: Subject: OpenVMS Hobbyist Program - A Tribute to John Wisniewski Date: 6 Apr 2004 10:54:47 -0700 From: davidc@montagar.com (David L. Cathey) Organization: http://groups.google.com Newsgroups: comp.os.vms Some people have asked if the OpenVMS Hobbyist Program was going away, given the pasing of its most outspoken champion, John Wisniewski. I assure you, that the OpenVMS Hobbyist Program will be continued, and John would not want it any other way. When Pat Jankowiak first thought of the idea of a hobby-level license for aging VAX hardware, it was John that encouraged him to made a reasoned, thoughtful, and passionate plea to the Digital Vice President panel at DECUS. John, ever the visionary, knew it could be done if it was presented clearly and simply. The panel took note of the applause, and the seed was planted. Afterwards, John worked the rounds of Digital's management, marketing, and legal groups. His passion was infectious, and he helped foster the internal support required to make this program a reality. He negotiated the basic group rules and pretty much the mutual responsibilities between Digital and what would become the OpenVMS Hobbyist Team. We were able to issue licenses within certain limitations, and create periodic media releases. The following DECUS, we announced the program. We actually got the final green light the day we announced it, John on the phone negotiating the last detail and assuring the thumbs up for the project. Later, John got Digital to agree to expand the program to Alpha and non-royalty Layered Products, a major enhancement to the program. Again, John's passion had won through. The Hobbyist Program has been going since 1997. The OpenVMS Organization was commited to the continued success of the OpenVMS Hobbyist Program before, and that commitment has not waivered. John was always involved in the project, handing out CD's and encouraging new hobbyists. The OpenVMS Hobbyist Program will continue to be part of John's legacy to the user community he was so devoted to serving. The OpenVMS Hobbyist Program will continue to be supported by the rest of the OpenVMS Hobbyist Team: Pat Jankowiak: OpenVMS Hobbyist #1 Steve Smiley: Webmaster David Cathey: License/Database Support
