For your convenience, the seminar will be held in different cities across the country in Calgary, Toronto and Montreal. These seminars will focus on delivering HP enterprise computing environment directions to IT professionals. IT Professionals interested in OpenVMS and Tru64 UNIX will gain significant value from these 1-day seminars. The preliminary agenda for the seminar is now posted on the Association Web site. Please visit http://www.canacu.org/seminar.htm regularly for updates as details are confirmed and added. So block off your calendars, bookmark the Web page, and forward the URL link to your friends and colleagues to let them know about the seminar! For more information, please contact Christian Berndt, Events Director, Canadian Association of Compaq Users at: events@canacu.org 2. NEWS FROM THE BOARD! TWO NEW BOARD MEMBERS APPOINTED On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to inform you that two members from the general membership have stepped forward and expressed an interest to serve on the Association Board. Following the guidelines of the Association bylaws, both members were appointed to the Board this past month by electronic vote. Please join me in welcoming Ruben Boiardi and Kevin Fitzpatrick to the Association's Board of Directors. Ruben Boiardi I have been involved in IT for almost 20 years, and my first involvement with DECUS was in 1986 when I worked on the symposium committee. I've previously served on the DECUS Board in various capacities, including newsletter editor. Currently, I am working as a consultant in Montreal, supporting financial systems for the National Bank of Canada. Kevin FitzPatrick Currently I work for the new HP Canada as a senior pre-sales systems engineer covering South Western Ontario. I have been in this role for the past 4.5 years. I not only cover OpenVMS, I also support the entire product line except the Tandem product line. In my current role I configure enterprise solutions covering the entire Compaq product line, give presentations to large and small groups and customers on the entire product line. I have been using OpenVMS going on 18 years. I started off at the very bottom as a Jr. operator, moved up through the ranks and became supervisor of computer operations with Dow Jones/Telerate. I am also an OpenVMS Ambassador (there are about 200 of us around the world). I am the Canadian National OpenVMS Champion and the Canadian Linux National Champion. The champion roles I currently do, is strictly to disseminate information from engineering to the SE base in Canada. I am currently ASE certified on OpenVMS. I am also Linux certified. Dave Wilson, President Canadian Association of Compaq Users 3. NEW CONTENT ADDED TO WEB SITE! Ongoing improvements and additions to the Web site are taking place as part of the Association's development plans to better serve the membership and create an online presence for the Association. Some of the interesting content that will be added to the site includes photo images of past activities that we have recently uncovered from storage at the (former) Compaq office. Please visit http://www.canacu.org/aboutus-associationhistory.htm often to find out what memorabilia content is being added to our Association History part of the site. 4. UPCOMING REPORT ON INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL MEETING Our International Representative has returned from the meeting at Lyon, France. Look forward to a report on how the meeting impacts our Canadian Association in the International Events section of the Web site. 5. TDMS ON ALPHA VAX TDMS was never ported to Alpha OpenVMS back when the majority of VAX applications/layered products were ported. This caused a headache for many customers - who either had to migrate to DECforms - or use emulators. There are still a few customers that run VAX - because of their heavy investment in TDMS. The good news is that there now exists a native Alpha TDMS port, that is about to go into field test. If any members that still have VAX TDMS and are interested in moving these to an Alpha OpenVMS platform, contact us and we will send you the release notes. If you are interested and can commit to participate in the Field Test of TDMS on Alpha, contact us - and we will forward your name to HP. 6. SELF MAINTAINERS SIG There has been interest in a new SIG for Compaq Self Maintainers. As you may know, a self maintainer is a firm that does not have a direct service level agreement with Compaq and is therefore responsible for supporting their own hardware and software. The purpose for this new SIG would be for members to exchange information regarding issues pertaining to those self maintainers that specifically deal with internal customers. This is an exciting opportunity to exchange ideas, concerns and questions for those members that do not have specific relationships with Compaq. In addition, the Association can serve as a conduit to Compaq, providing a way for self maintainers to more effectively service their users. If you are a Compaq Self Maintainer, and are interested in participating in this SIG, please let us know at 'inquire@canacu.org'. 7. ON-LINE ADVOCACY Have issues for Compaq? Share your thoughts! Reach Compaq through the "Local Voices...Global Reach" Online Advocacy Program. Your opinions count, so visit today to submit issues or participate in the latest Insta-poll question. If you have issues specific to Compaq Canada that you think are not appropriate for the Online Advocacy Program, feel free to forward them to advocacy@canacu.org, and the Association board will present it to the Canadian Management Committee through our Compaq Delegate, Matthew MacFarlane. 8.
