FINAL FAREWELLS

Clifford Long
We are saddened to have to announce the loss of yet another friend of our user community. Clifford Long, one of our well-respected European colleagues, passed away from cancer at the end of May 2005. Clifford lived and worked in Norway and was a long time service leader with many leadership positions within the European Chapter of DECUS. Those of us who had the honour and privilege of meeting and working with him will remember that his spirit was unique and his character unforgettable. One of Clifford’s recent accomplishments was serving as Conference Chair for the 2003 CUO/Interex/DECUS European Users Conference and Expo - a successful event that marked the inaugural effort of the newly formed HP-Interex EMEA, a federation of HP’s European user groups representing some 70,000 IT professionals. |

Terry Shannon - End of An Era
We are very saddened to convey the news that Terry Shannon has passed on Thursday, May 26, 2005 due to a terminal illness with depression. Terry was highly regarded in the high performance computing users community and was the publisher of the "Shannon Knows HPC" newsletter. Terry has been a friend of Canadian HP users since the DECUS days and he often described himself as a friend of Canada. Terry was a frequent participant at Encompass Canada and CANACU seminars and was the keynote speaker at the Association's seminar in February 2005. |

The entire HP user community was shocked at the sudden death of Terry Shannon on May 26th. Terry has been a fixture in the Digital/Compaq/HP scene for over two decades. The many tributes posted on his website attest to the impact he had on the IT community. They range from close friends and colleagues to people who only knew Terry from his columns. They all confirm what we know about Terry Shannon - that he was a skilled analyst, journalist and commentator. And he always did it with his own special sense of humour.
Terry was a perennial favourite at Encompass Canada events, dating back to the DECUS Canada days. I was fortunate to meet him at least once a year at various events, so that he seemed like an old friend when we last met in Toronto in February. It seemed almost amusing that he still made it a point to thank his Canadian friends for their assistance in the US Embassy hostage-taking in Iran a quarter century ago. But that was just Terry - the genuine article.

Caroline Singleton
A tribute to a dear friend who passed away peacefully this past summer after an illness she faced with tremendous strength and dignity. Caroline was a long time member, a friend of DECUS who joined the Association in the mid-80's and quickly became involved in various leadership volunteer roles. She headed up the Montreal Local User Group (PAXLUG), for a number of years. Later, Caroline was an elected Director on the DECUS Canada Board for several terms supporting the areas of Membership, Local User Groups, Symposia and contributed regular technical articles to DECUScope, the members-only magazine. Those of you who remember Caroline, will recall her beautiful smile, tireless energy and her drive to support the user community for so many years. For those of us she touched, inspired and laughed with, she will forever be with us in our hearts and memory. |

Brian Coll
We regret to announce the passing away of Brian Coll on August
10, 2003. A marketing communications specialist for 30 years with Digital, Compaq and then
Hewlett Packard at the time of his death, many of us will remember Brian Coll as Vice President
External Relations for Digital Canada who also served as the DEC Delegate for DECUS until he left
for the US in the early 1990's. He later participated in the Digital Task Force to create the
set of "Guiding Principles" in preparation for the acquisition of Digital by Compaq in the late 1990's. Brian Coll, 55, was born in Ontario and is survived by his wife of 25 years, LaDona Coll, his
two daughters, Alyson and Amanda, and two sisters. He was a good friend and active supporter of
DECUS Canada and is best know by members of the Association for his keen understanding of user
groups as being beneficial to both the company and contributing to a healthy customer and market
environment. He will be missed by the our user group community.
To my friend Brian,
Your time with us may have been short, but you taught us well. You came to us with a lot of style, grace and wisdom.
During the time that I knew you, you imparted all of that and more. Showed us that it is the person that mattered and
everything else was secondary. How right you are.
How can I repay you for what you have brought our group during your time with us. I can only say this. I will miss you
my friend and you have made a difference.
Marcus Schack
DECUS President (1991-1994)
Symposium Co-Chair (Van89, Van94)
